Interleukin 3 (IL-3) is a multipotent hematopoietic growth factor, also known as multilinage colony stimulating factor (multi-CSF) that can stimulate the proliferation, differentiation, and survival of pluripotent hematopoietic stem cells as well as various lineagecommitted progenitors. In addition to its effects on hematopoietic cells, IL-3 promotes the growth and survival of endothelial cell, smooth muscle cell, and neuron. IL-3 is expressed by activated T cells, natural killer cells, mast cells, epithelial cells, stromal cells.
Natural human IL-3 is a glycosylated protein containing 133 amino acids with observed molecular weights ranging from 20 to 26 kDa depending on the amount of glycosylation. IL-3 receptor consists of a cytokine-binding component, α chain (IL-3 Rα) and a signal transduction subunit, β chain (βc) which is shared with IL-5 and GM-CSF.
The Human IL-3 Immunoassay is a solid-phase ELISA designed to measure human IL- 3 in cell culture supernatants, as well as serum and plasma. It contains recombinant human IL-3 as a standard and has been shown to accurately determine relative mass values for naturally occurring IL-3.
